The ending of Breaking Bad screams for not a real ending. The ending of Dexter was terrible, it never had a chance of a happy ending, him keeping his son and getting the girl; but he should have died. The ending was cheapened by keeping him alive.

X-men movies will never show the truly best parts of X-Men. Once Patrick Stewart or Hugh Jackman is too old or no longer interested it will be impossible to fill their shoes. Even without Ian McKellen to play the older Magneto, I don't feel it would be the same. I don't foresee an Apocalypse saga, X-Cutioner's Song, proper Dark Phoenix Saga, Wolverine vs. The Reavers, or anything pertaining to multiverse or combination threats.. IE: Onslaught. I don't even collect em, but know these stories. Sad.

I think the most epic movies and books always leave the "hero" in a state of defeat while completing the primary task.
I am not talking about Swordfish or Oceans ## style bad guys either. The pink panther is epic, but it's not because the "bad guy" triumphs, he is the hero.

-Instances where this was applied.
Oldboy: One of the best movies of our generation. Why; the hero while still winning was defeated by his enemy.
Gladiator: While winning the fight he died. His family slaughtered. But the republic was solidified.
The Matrix: Agent Smith died but he fulfilled his prophecy as the one. He saved Zion from the machines.
Star Trek - Nemesis: The hero Data dies but in the end saves the crew.
Reservoir Dogs: Possibly... If Mr Pink escaped with the Jewels, and Mr White killed Orange then this applies. The primary task was the jewels be stolen. The secondary task was the death of Orange after he manipulated White. Mr White is the singular hero, who was manipulated into destroying the hero group Himself (because he could have ran), Nice guy Eddy, Joe, Blonde. Orange also seen to the destruction of the rest of the hero group by informing the police. So Orange defeated the hero group, but there is a chance that the jewels were still stolen and he was destroyed.
Captain Phillips: This one could go either way, The cap will likely never be the same so in a way was defeated, and if the mission was to permanently end the pirate siege and deliver the cargo then it was a success.
300 : Leonidas dies but he shows that even a god can bleed.
Smoking Aces: Perfection.

-Where this could effectively be applied is
After Earth: There was no reason for Will Smith to survive.
Captain Phillips: The cap probably should have died to increase epicness.
Enders Game: Alien should have killed him. Though I will say taking the alien to find a new home is also okay.
Decision Points: Bush should have been tried for crimes against humanity and possibly impeached.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: The ending should have been pushed to the next movie. Left it with the electrocution.
Harry Potter: Harry should have died.
Transformers: Megatron should have won, Period.
Superman: Where is Doomsday. With superman killed, and then coming back to life and finally performing evil by ending doomsday, we would see a Superman that isn't a boring unbeatable boyscout. This would perhaps give him a fighting chance against Batman.

Spiderman is good friends with Deadpool, so it's okay if he dies. He doesn't cheat like Superman.

Just one thing with the captain phillips critique. he didn't die in the actual pirate attack

I should have added it to the main point that being a true story it may not require changing facts to add to the finality of the ending.

However, it's not like it would be the first time that a true story was radically altered for maximum effect. I knew the real story going in and also am aware of how the US handles such matters so there were no surprises. A twist in the ending even if predictable and expected, may have heightened the movie for me.

This isn't to say it wasn't an adequate movie or story told as is.

I don't know about the good guy having to face some kind of giant penalty being required to make a book epic. I mean
Not everything has to be like a greek tragedy.

Shogun was pretty fluffn epic, although I suppose the main hero got forced to stay in Japan at the end which was a penalty (kind of). He wasn't really upset about it though. And yeah.. the ending had finality.

I guess Sin city kind of illustrates both points. So does Seven (I loved that movie).
What about fight club? I mean I guess with fight club one of the protagonists technically "dies"
And what about Kill bill. Although I guess the point to that movie wasn't plot suprise/twist but rather graphic fight scenes and giving the audience what they wanted to see. The ending was more or less made somewhat obvious from the beginning and that wasn't the point. Did you know that most greek tragedies were shown to audiences who actually knew the general plot of the stories and how it ended. The point was the journey not the ending.

Requiem for a dream has a more open ended ending which was somewhat epic.

I have to say that I have a horrible talent for predicting endings half way through the movie.

The exception being Seven and a couple of other movies which I can't think of right now.
