There are all kinds of weird agricultural laws floating around in Canada.

Chicken, egg and dairy farmers are very protective. They have money to lobby and force police to enforce crazy regs.

A couple of people I know were on the front page of a small NS town because they were keeping hens in their yard and were breaking the law. The bylaw says the cages have to be a certain distance from property lines - a distance much larger than most backyards can accomodate.

martian: Crazy to think that dairy farmers not only earn the highest income, along with chicken and eggers, but on top they also build huge equity in their quota on everyone else's dime. They need huge income to justify buying 25k$ worth of quote just to support the product of 1 cow but in the end it ends up being like a mortgage that gets paid off and you're left with a hugely valuable asset.

Which came first, the egg or the government subsidy?
