The 25-year-old from Salem, Oregon, had used Turbo Tax to file her income tax return for 2011.
She claimed earnings of $3million but used the tax calculator programme to claim a refund of $2.1million, Oregon Live reported.
Due to the size of the refund, her electronic claims was examined by several people within the Oregon Revenue Department

Only way someone loses their job over this is if the Oregon Revenue Department employs non-unionized workers. Which is unlikely because it's Oregon.

Why would anyone in the Oregon Revenue Department be in trouble? It's TurboTax/this woman that mucked it up and got busted.

Because you can only get a refund for taxes you've already paid and had taken from your paycheck. The Oregon Revenue Department didn't bother to check whether or not they had received the money from her paychecks in the first place.

Its the Dept. of Revenue's job to check/ audit returns. Which this one was checked. They failed!

I think you might want to read the story again!

LOL Req, you included in your post:
Due to the size of the refund, her electronic claims was examined by several people within the Oregon Revenue Department

But didn't include the next sentence:
Incredibly, they approved the payout

misleading bastard...

she gets a debit card for $2.1m and she does this with it?

Reyes, according to an arrest affidavit, paid $2,000 in cash for a 1999 Dodge Caravan and used the card to buy $800 worth of tires and wheels.

LOL.

Reyes, so Mexican?

You don't understand the Latino obsession with vans, esp Safaris and Caravans.

Pain it is obvious that she is, should we say, lacking in the intelligence category for even attempting such an act. What I find even more lacking is the governments complete and utter failure with protecting the peoples money in a responsible way. This to me is only a sign of a much bigger problem. If "several people" did indeed check the return only to allow a 2.1m dollar refund be issued to her on a pre-paid visa card to a lady who lives in a cheap apartment in Oregon who else got away with tax fraud for smaller much less obvious amounts?

What a retard, why would you report the card missing?! She was obviously very intelligent, its a wonder she got away with this, especially after several "officials" double checked this and then issued the card. Then she had to go and test her luck. wow!

I suspect that $100m computer upgrade that they pulled the plug will be back as a rather more expensive upgrade. Not sure anyone in Oregon will lose their job, but it will be a close call if noone does. The thing with issues like this one is that it could be about 70% systemic failure, 30% people failure spready among several people. If none of those people got the information that would normally have triggered a more thorough examination or possibly even denying the refund claim, then it's possible they may only face reprimand and that this won't reach the level of fault required for termination.

My question is how did she get a 70% tax refund based off claimed earnings?

"Reported earnings of $3 million but used the tax calculator program to claim a refund of $2.1 million"
