Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) announced a class action lawsuit against the National Security Agency’s data collection program.
President Obama, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, NSA Director Keith Alexander and FBI Director James Comey were all named in the suit.
Paul believes the program violates Americans’ constitutional rights. “There’s a huge and growing swell of protest in this country of people who are outraged that their records would be taken without suspicion, without a judge’s warrant, and without individualization," he said in today's announcement.
Also today, a group of private experts, appointed by the president to investigate the NSA’s practices, are testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The administration claims the programs are legal, which is inconsistent with some of the panel’s findings.
Ultimately, the Supreme Court may weigh in on the data collection program.
