Anyway, I now understand its actually an alien spacecraft sending strange screaming electromagnetic signals.

Did anything on the probe even work as intended?

From what I have skimmed 3 of the landing arresting systems failed and the fluff bounced a hundred meters or more, and now the batteries are going to die at any moment.

Getafix - I only scan ET, I don't play express, and AT is traditionally the "everything" board that General Talk is supposed to be.

ford - first try, and they got there. Pretty amazing even if it didn't go as planned. "No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy."

That is a very weak measure of success since their goal wasn't to just land.

It is cool and everything and the logistics are impressive, but they havnt yet accomplished their goals.

No problem VicRattlehead, I was just joking.

Anyway, yes, this is one of the few things in the news that gives me hope. Its a remarkable mission and a great achievement getting to the surface of the comet at all.

The Wright brothers didn't make a transcontinental flight on their first go round either. Nothing is accomplished all at once. Everything takes incremental progress.

What are you even talking about? The wright brothers goal wasn't a transcontinental flight.

Stop overreacting. I asked if anything worked as intented because multiple systems failed during the landing and it has effected the mission profile.

I said it was impressive feat, but not yet a success and completing the original mission seems a longshot now.. That is not a false statment.

That is the problem. It didn't land where it was intended to and they believe it is in a shadow, greatly reducing avaliable power through the solar cells. A few Mars rovers had similar problems caused by fine dust covering the solar cells almost killing the rovers. I believe a wind storm helped in that instance. Maybe the comet's rotation will allow limited sunlight during brief windows, but it is pretty clear full power is not a likely scenario.

You people need to read better. I didn't say the mission was worthless, I even admitted it impressive logistically.

My point is that there were numerous malfunctions that very well could doom the mission preventing it from attaining the stated goals of drilling, analyzing samples, and returning that info back to earth.

Hopefully they can get it to shift and bounce a few more times . Maybe those little thrusters it has will be enuf

The fact that it hit the comet after a 10 year mission is incredible in itself. The limited info it sent back is a major bonus in my eyes

Can you imagine how cool it would be if they had sent another off every year?
Course the cost would be crazy...but very very cool to get something back every year from other comets

Hmm, I don't know how many comets we need to land on. I think the whole thing is awesome, and I am glad they did it, but I am more excited about stuff like this. http://www.theregister.co.uk/...on_landing_2017_moonbase/

Is it feasible at the current levels of tech? I don't know, but it's the sort of thing I think needs to be tried.

The theory is that life was brought to earth via comet. The matter under the surface of the comet we landed on is virtually unchanged for 4.5 billion years. Could give us answers.

So yeah, if you want to know where we came from or get an answer to that theory, land on comets.

Ice comets crashing into a developing earth over billions of years. Not that advanced of a concept!

The problem most people have is the concept of time on a scale that big. It isn't a natural frame of thought.

Me too. :)

I am not familiar with the theory that all the water on earth came from ice comets. Seems far fetched. Other planets should have similar amounts of water if that's the case, and we can say for sure that Mars does not have oceans.

CalTech scientist says water content of comets is chemically dissimilar from the water on Earth.

OTOH, this piece seems to take it for granted that comets and/or asteroids brought us all the water.

Most people believe that it DID have oceans though. Considering the age of the universe, it's not far fetched to imagine that many more worlds used to have water, but no longer do for various reasons.

I think one of the most interesting things they discover as technology advances is that the likelihood of finding earth-like worlds is much much higher than most people guessed/assumed. That's pretty amazing :)

That isn't how it works, and Mars did have running water before it's core died and atmosphere dissapated. Earth is the only planet in our solar system with the right temperature/pressure/gravity/atmosphere combination for liquid water. That doesn't mean other planets don't have water. They do.

Liquid oceans of other elements, but yeah. I think Europa is liquid methane? I know one of them moons was.

Like when Mars lost its atmosphere, it's liquid water either froze aat the poles, or dissapated. No pressure to keep it from floating away.

I didn't mean to imply that Mars doesn't have water, it was kind of a big deal when we confirmed some ice some years back I remember. My point was more about geography. Mars clearly had more water at one point but the surface topography doesn't seem to indicate they had oceans.

Topography? What do you think the earth would look like without its oceans? Oceans arnt flat bottomed bro. In addition, Mars is a smaller planet, less gravity to attracattract comets and such.
