In multiple comic/cartoon series where batman fights superman (incl when superman is being controlled by some alien thingy) batman wins or at least fights to a draw. The latest is dark knight returns (part 2). Lets face it, superman is not known for being all that brilliant, I mean he's not an idiot but he's no genius either. Batman more often than not has a track record of beating opponents by outsmarting them (at least in the most recent versions of batman) other than the Joker and regular bad guys. Superman is almost always about brute force.

Martian you are right about batman but I don't know why...Simply because Superman's arch enemy is Lex luthor who is a evil super genius and does not have any moral qualms about killing...and yet is always defeated even with copious amounts of kryptonite. Sooooooo yeah. Why would Bats win where Luthor failed. Makes no sense.

Superman has died, Batman has not.

I think when it comes to planning and smarts, batman is smarter than lex (based on limited interactions in justice league when batman is a part). Lex always gets too greedy and/or the deus ex device saves superman. In the more modern renditions of batman (past 30 years) deus ex only seems to help create villains. Batmans arch nemesis (the joker) is also very intelligent and I would say a much scarier villain than lex due to total lack of constaint (1960s batman not withstanding). I think the compairisson point is this: Superman never actually kills Lex (other than in alternate universes or is afraid he might resort to it) whereas in at least 2 renditions of batman that I can think of batman either kills or is directly linked to killing the joker (the comic "death of robyn", or the cartoons "dark knight returns", or "return of the joker"). The joker actually kills/cripples main stream heroes in some renditions too (robyn/bat girl) which is more than I can say for Lex afaik.

PS Mark Hamil does an awesome voice for the joker. Who would ever have thought that a soap opera star would ever end up doing that:P

Ohh, but he wouldn't. That's why batman would win. It doesn't matter if superman could defeat him which is questionable, but rather the fact that given the chance to defeat batman he wouldn't.

batman faces idiots- wow!, what a nice purce!!, earth stranded enemies. superman faces, like, intergalactic civil wars and revolutions, whom match or equal his powers from a yellow sun. and when, exactly, does batman save his parents from a back alley heroin deal gone wrong? oh, thats right, superman reverses time in the universe and isn't fluffing robin in the fluff of the ass

symac raises good points: we do well, superman does good. if superman defeating batman caused bad in the world, superman would let batman win so as to bring in the good to the world.

clarke kent dies? humanity is in ruins. batman dies? his shares get sold off and equally divided to his share holders?

Symac: at least in dark knight returns, arguably superman reaches the point where he would kill batman. In general no though. Neither one of them would kill on purpose. In the cases where batman wins, he only cripples superman

I don't do the comics and too many shards are created by them but I don't recall ever hearing of Batman's death. Mayhaps he has though. I would be interested to know the who what where why of it though. Superman fights with strength and yet was killed by brute force. If batman was killed by intelligence, then they are equal in the regard.

I think Superman can kill Batman in a battle of strength. Only so many distractions Batman could create with out planning ahead. As stated though likely Batman would have some prewarning, and from this be able to create and execute some plan. Superman has no other resources but himself where as Batman could bring an entire city and wealth down on Superman. I doubt Batman would have any trouble locating and acquiring Kryptonite.

Batman is one of those characters that if you don't finish him off he is just going to keep coming. Martian evidently has much comic knowledge and agrees that for most cases Superman isn't willing to finish it.

So unless Superman is willing to kill and completely surprises Batman, he has no chance.

A much more interesting fight would be a cross universe Onslaught vs DC.

symac: technically he died in the end of final crisis and also in new superman & batman-comic he was dead (got resurrecred by nanobots or something like that but that storyline ended there).

As for cryptonite: in the JLU cartoon and in dark knight returns cartoon (I recommend watching it) that's pretty much his solution. It's funny how batman can use kryptonite successfully but Lex always manages to mess up some how.

If you just take the two superman wins. But Batman is more badass than superman.

The only way batman could win is if he had that green rock stuff.

less exposure than lex has and villains use kryptonite always pretty much same way always (like put chunk of green-k in front of superman's face so 1 swift kick and green-k is faraway and villain is behind bars soo after that kick).

depends on the scenario.

1) If superman and batman have an unexpected encounter, then superman wins.

2) If batman knows ahead of time, he will have a plan involving kryptonite; I'd imagine he would place it in a lead box so superman can't use his X-ray. That fight will be more interesting and could go either way.

Superman has a penis made out of steel, Batman has an anus. what's to discuss? just tell the dorks to move to one of those gay marriage states the the US has recently acquired from The Taliban War.
